Unseeded Ronato Alcano of the Philippines beat seventh-seed Ralf Souquet of Germany to bag the 2006 World Pool Championship crown and the US$100,000 winner’s purse.
The hometown crowd erupted in wild applause as underdog Alcano stunned Souquet with a 17-11 victory in his first World Pool finals appearance, broadcast live to millions of the sport’s fans around the world.
Alcano led most of the way to a clear victory over Souqet, the odds-on favourite to win after blazing his way to the finals, beating a tough line-up that included three Taiwanese players.
